Mission Space: Milder Alternative

Walt Disney World is putting into effect a "No G-Force" alternative to the Mission Space Ride at Epcot by the beginning of the summer.
What this would do is create two versions of the ride.
Guests could decide whether to go on the existing version, or on one where the centrifuge doesn't spin.
Disney says the original version of the ride would not be toned down.
The move comes after a few tourists died after getting on the ride.
A 4-year old boy and a 49-year old woman have died in the past year after riding Mission Space. Doctors believe they both had preexisting medical conditions

Who Are They? - Donald Duck

One of the most popular of the Disney cartoon characters, Donald Duck made his debut in the Silly Symphony cartoon "The Wise Little Hen" on June 9, 1934. His fiery temper endeared him to audiences, and in the 1940s he surpassed Mickey Mouse in the number of cartoons reaching the theaters. Eventually, there were 128 Donald Duck cartoons, but he also appeared in a number of others with Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and Pluto. His middle name, shown in a wartime cartoon, is Fauntleroy. The original voice of Donald was Clarence "Ducky" Nash, who was succeeded after 50 years by Disney artist Tony Anselmo. A daily Donald Duck newspaper comic strip began on February 7, 1938.
Donald Duck has a good heart and always has good intentions. Well, almost always. Actually, it's his second or third intentions that are the good ones, but by the time they surface Donald's already off and running in the wrong direction. He refuses to let anyone or anything stand in his way. It doesn't matter how much humiliation the world dishes out to him, Donald will take it and come back for more. He's a loser, not a quitter, and he'll go down fighting. This is a duck with one short fuse, and an amazing (if unintelligible) command of language, and when things don't go right, he goes ballistic. Yet after the storm is over and the tantrum is through, when faithful Daisy soothes his brow or his conscience finally catches up with him, even Donald can admit that there must be a better way. If only he could figure out what it is.
Hot-headed Donald is a little man in a big world that's trying to keep him down. Call it fate, or call it lack of self-control, nothing goes right for this duck: even his best intentions often go awry. Of course, by the time his best intentions surface he's probably already chasing after less noble pursuits. As stubborn as he is temperamental, he won't give in, even when he's up to his beak in trouble. Then watch out. Like a lot of people with a temper problem, he's blind to his own faults but quick to see them in others. He can't understand why life seems so much easier for pals Mickey and easy-going Goofy. It's not fair. Still, Donald will keep struggling to get what he deserves in the world. Favorite sayings: "Oh, yeah?" "Hiya, toots!" "Aw, phooey!" "Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!" "Nothin' to it!"

Disney Fundraising Effort
Scotch Plains, NJ, June 15, 2006 -- On Saturday, July 15, the DisneyWorldTrivia.com Dream Team expects to reach its goal of securing the necessary funding to sponsor a pediatric cancer patient from the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center on an all-expense paid trip to Walt Disney World when they hold an auction of over 60 Disney-related items and collectibles. The auction will be held at the third annual Fred Block's Northeast Disney Fan Meet at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Allentown, PA. All proceeds will be donated to the Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation for the express purpose of funding the trip.
The fundraising effort, which has been spearheaded by DisneyWorldTrivia.com owner and webmaster, Lou Mongello, of Scotch Plains, NJ, has seen monetary donations as well as donations of Disney items and collectibles for the auction come from a variety of sources, including visitors to the site, other Disney fans, and from members of the DisneyWorldTrivia.com "family." The prized possession at the auction in Allentown will be a one of a kind original painting graciously donated by Disney Design Group Artist, Brian Blackmore. The full-color acrylic-on-canvas painting, a private work created by Blackmore in his home studio that depicts Disney's Donald Duck dancing and playing a banjo, is mounted in a beautiful gold frame and was most recently displayed in the Art of Disney Gallery in New York City. It was also featured in the March 13, 2006 issue of People Magazine in a photo with celebrity host, Michael J. Fox, commemorating the gallery's opening.
Mongello, who is the author of The Walt Disney World Trivia Books (Vol. 1 and 2) and co-host of the popular MouseTunes.com Podcast, donates a portion of all proceeds from the sale of DisneyWorldTrivia.com logo merchandise on his site to the Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation to sponsor a child's wish to visit Walt Disney World. He knows first-hand the pain cancer can inflict on victims and their families, having dealt with it in his immediate family. In an excerpt taken from his website, he states, "A child and (his or her) family who may be suffering physically, emotionally and spiritually, are also often struggling financially to pay for hospital bills and other medical expenses. Not only is it difficult to deal with the illness itself, but often children are confined to a hospital or bed. By granting their wish to go to Walt Disney World, we…can help make a child's life a bit brighter by spending some time away from the hospital, and in one of the happiest places on Earth."

Who Are They? - Alice in Wonderland

Alice is tired of logic and lessons and the ordinary world. She wants a world of her very own: a world of nonsense, if you please, where everything will be what it isn't, and "contrariwise," when it isn't, will be what it is. That's why she's so very eager to follow the White Rabbit, despite some sound advice to herself about not going where one hasn't been invited. Once she's tumbled in it's too late to turn back, and Alice finds Wonderland not only as nonsensical and fantastical as she could have hoped, but frustrating and perplexing as well. "It's all so confusing!" she cries after mad tea parties and caterpillars and disappearing cats. But it's all very well to complain now that she's gotten what she wanted. Perhaps she should have followed her own "very good advice" and stayed where she was, and left Wonderland to her dreams.
The Alice of Lewis Carroll's stories was a real little girl: 12-year-old Alice Liddell, daughter of a colleague. Carroll originally told the story to Alice herself while on an outing on July 4, 1882, a day that is considered as important to the history of English literature as that date is to American history.
Kathryn Beaumont, the young actress who voiced and modeled for Alice (as well as Wendy in "Peter Pan"), spent the majority of two years at the Disney Studios, even going to school on the lot, so she could be on-call for the duration of production.

The Magic Kingdom. At 107 acres, the park is just a small part of the 47 square miles of property owned by Walt Disney World. That's about the size of San Francisco or twice the size of Manhattan. Less than one-fourth of the property has been developed with another fourth set aside as a wilderness preserve.

Who Are They? - Tinkerbell

Tinker Bell is the jealous pixie who glows brightest for Peter Pan. Her voice sings like a tinkling bell and a sprinkle of her pixie dust can make you fly. But this sprite can turn spiteful if she suspects that Peter's attentions are diverted to anyone but herself. It's bad enough that she has to compete with Never Land's other adoring females (the mermaids and Princess Tiger Lily), but now Peter's brought back this Wendy person from London. Tink would lay down her life for Peter, but he's too busy playing Wendy's hero to care. Somehow she'll find a way to settle the score, even if it takes eliminating the competition.
In Sir James M. Barrie's original play, Tinker Bell is traditionally staged as a flying point of light beamed from offstage. Animator Marc Davis' personification of her as a winged pixie with a very womanly figure was widely criticized as too sexually suggestive by Barrie purists, especially after it was rumored that she was modeled after actress Marilyn Monroe. Tink was actually modeled after Margaret Kerry, the actress who performed her live-action reference.
The popular Miss Bell went on to a second career as TV hostess for Disney's anthology series ("Disneyland®," "Walt Disney Presents," "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color," and "The Wonderful World of Disney"), and Tinker Bell still flies through the sky over Disneyland every night in the summer to herald the evening fireworks.

Spending a Night at Cinderella's Castle

"Cinderella fans must wait a while longer before learning details of what a night in her castle might be like -- and then wait until January for a chance to win such a visit.
Walt Disney World officials say they haven't worked out many details about the part of their big, new, yearlong promotion that is piquing imaginations: a chance to spend the night in the royal chamber at Cinderella Castle.
"Oh my gosh," said Brandee Foxworthy of Longwood, whose daughter, Ella, was named for the fairy-tale princess. "My first thought was, in what way could we increase our chances?"
That's yet to be answered, along with: How will winners be picked? What will the suite be like? What will visitors do after the park closes?
Craig Dezern, a marketing vice president, said those details still are being worked out. Even the apartment is only a shell right now, with planners discussing how to turn it into a royal chamber.
For that reason, it won't be ready for occupancy until January, even though Disney's "Year of a Million Dreams" promotion begins Oct. 1.
The single-floor apartment is about 10 stories up, where the main structure of the castle ends and the spires climb on their own.
Some say Walt Disney ordered it as a family suite, but he died in 1966 and castle construction didn't begin until 1969. Some say Walt's brother, Roy Disney, planned it, but he died in 1971, weeks after the Magic Kingdom opened.
The room was never finished.
Jerry Aldrich, a Disney official from 1971 to '98 before leaving to start Amusement Industry Consulting in Orlando, has been in it several times. He said it wasn't even drywalled.
Until now, Disney found less than royal uses for the apartment. At times the space was used as a radio room, a telephone switchboard operators' room and a greenroom, where entertainers could change or relax.
Like many Disney and Cinderella fans, the Foxworthys can't wait.
"We would be over the moon to spend time in the castle and have special pictures and memories of that," Brandee Foxworthy said."

"Year of Magical Dreams"

From an overnight stay inside Cinderella Castle to a Golden FASTPASS, dreams big and small will come true at Disneyland and Walt Disney World resorts during Disney's "Year of a Million Dreams," a first-of-its-kind celebration of the individual dreams of Disney Parks guests.
The year-long celebration, beginning Oct. 1, 2006, at Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, will feature the debut of an incredible lineup of new attractions and entertainment at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World resorts, plus new technologies that allow guests to customize their Disney park experience.
And, for the first time, during the "Year of a Million Dreams" celebration, Disney cast members will award a million dreams – both large and small, including many "money-can't-buy" experiences – to guests selected through a random process as part of a unique "Disney Dreams Giveaway" promotion.
"Throughout this incredible celebration, special dreams and unique experiences once thought impossible will be awarded by our cast every day," said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. "Disney parks are always the place where dreams come true – but even more so during the 'Year of a Million Dreams.' "
The "impossible" includes the creation of over-the-top, overnight experiences for winning guests at both East and West Coast resorts: a royal bedchamber inside Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World Resort and a Mickey Mouse Penthouse at Disneyland Resort, both expected to be complete by January 2007.
A day of royal treatment will end with a night of enchantment inside Cinderella Castle for a different lucky guest each night. Cinderella's royal bedchamber, now under construction at Magic
Kingdom, will allow Disney guests to stay overnight inside the park and enjoy a view shared only by Tinker Bell. The lavishly decorated bedroom will be located in a space originally planned as an in-park apartment for the use of the Disney family.
And for a lucky Disneyland guest, each night, the all-new Mickey Mouse Penthouse at Disneyland Hotel will pour on the Mickey charm and include magical views overlooking both Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure parks. The extraordinary penthouse will be decorated in all things Mickey, with finishing touches by none other than Minnie Mouse herself.
In addition, during the year-long celebration, other Disney dreams both large and small will be awarded in the "Disney Dreams Giveaway" promotion, such as:
- Traveling to each Disney resort around the world to serve as grand marshal in a Disney parade.
- A variety of unique Disney vacation experiences.
- Admission to special parties and other extraordinary experiences in the Disneyland and Walt Disney World parks.
- Private meetings with favorite Disney characters.
- Or, a Golden FASTPASS ticket with unique access entitlements to some of Disney's most popular attractions.
